How come they could shoot it with a gun but not a tranquilizer?? Makes no sense to me.

I was intending to post asking exactly that question, but you got there first.
This sucks.

I think the point is...if they "tried" to shoot it with a tranquilizer, why would that not work, but it would work to shoot it with a gun. That is what doesn't make sense.

Of course everyone is commenting the same -- why did the gun to kill hit the bear and the 6 days of a tranquilizer guy did not? If this was a human more people would be outraged. But it's an animal, so it's okay? I'm sad and disgusted. What a waste.

Yeah- I've seen them tranquilize elephants. Looks like the DNR guy was looking to get hunting season started ealy. Thats how they roll in Minn. They freaking love to kill animals. I'm no member of Peta, but I think its funny they are trying to act like they "tried, but just couldn't get the job done."

There is no excuse for shooting any God given animal because he made the mistake of having a bottle stuck on his head these people have know respect with life, and the Man that shot this animal should be shot in the ass.

Exactly. They managed to "shoot to kill." But they couldn't "shoot to tranquilize"? How hard did they really try?

AMEN!!! Ok yeah it's going to kill everyone! Bull @!$%# it has a jar stuck on it's head it couldn't do nothing, it's just a baby. It was just as scared, wouldn't you be? I Hate people who just go around killing............. because it's an animal.

Me too! Where was Peta? That animal could have been tranquilized and taken into the woods and released. Not acceptable.

Oh, I see....they could shoot to kill the poor thing, but couldn't help it with a tranquilizer gun????? How can a bear with its head in a bottle be of serious concern to anyone? Sounds like animal cruelty to me and someone just wanted a trophy. There needs to be further investigation.

The article did claim that they tried to tranquilize it, BUT if they could shoot it with a gun then they could shoot it with a tranquilizer gun...That's why it makes no sense and everyone is getting mad about it. You are shooting the animal either way... It's just that one way puts it to sleep to be helped, and the other pumps some hot metal into the poor thing.

I'm not usually a big animal rights person, but I still don't like them to be hurt for no reason... and this was definitely uncalled for.

Must've been so much easier for them to kill the bear.
Rather than be humane. Seems like a C.Y.A situation to me. Which law enforcement does so often.
These are officers of the law ? The ones who could not hit the bear with a dart ? But more than able to hit it with a bullet . Bet somebody wanted a rug. Poor bear.

Ok, the bear in the pic is standing perfectly still and they can't shoot it with a tranquilizer gun???? Brilliant. Obviously the bear couldn't BITE anyone. Maybe they were enjoying the hunt. They should be arrested for animal cruelty!

Sure does! Sounds like the easy way out. Must have been Barney Fife with the tranquilizer gun! How can you not knock out the poor bear, cut the jar off his head and take him way out into the woods. Would be nice to hear an explanation.

my thoughts exactly, if you are close enough to shoot it with a bullet, you are close enough to shoot it with a tranquilizer. Ridiculous that it was killed!!!! Sounds like they just got tired of dealing with it.......too bad they don't treat criminals, gang bangers, etc like that! Public execution-i'm all for it!

I just read this news story and I am horrified!!! That poor bear! The "Wildlife" officials should have been able to tranquilize this poor creature, but evidently they didn't try very hard. With its head stuck in a jar, it really couldn't have done too much damage. I hope they get a karma payback for this!

Total bull. If you're gonna kill it so what but don't lie about it. The bear is partially immoble and sight limited and you can't shoot it with a dart. Only a deaf muted tard would believe that. I can't believe a reporter even printed it.

Absolutely another case of people having a total disregard for wild animals...I think the wild animals are the people. If people had not used a plastic container and left it where the bear could find it, none of this would have happened. I lived with bears for several years. In fact they swam in our swimming pool and ate fruit and avocados from our trees. I really think they would not bother you unless they felt threatened. If people can shoot the bear with bullets, they could have tranquilized it...I am sure the bear was very frightened. Wouldn't you be?

So, the officers had the bear in sight to shoot it but no one could get close enough to tranquilize it? The danger of the bear consists of its claws and its JAWS. If the bears head was stuck in a jar, how could it pose enough of a danger to warrant shooting it? Is it normal practice to shoot first and ask questions later? I am appalled that this bears life was cut short by law enforcements inability to examine the situation carefully and safely for ALL parties concerned.

This really is bull@!$%#. If you can't catch a bear with a plastic jug on its head in SIX DAYS, you are not doing your job properly. Its no wonder that people get riled up over stuff like this. I'm no expert on tranquilizer guns, but I think the idea is that you shoot the animal and it gets a high dose of sedatives, at which point you remove the jug that is starving and dehydrating it, and relocate it to a remote location. It seems excessive to shoot and kill it. Odds are that it didn't even know it was going towards a city, but was rather trying to get the jug off its head.

Anyways, I have infinite disrespect for the CO who couldn't manage to hit a bear (A BEAR, come on), with a single tranq dart over the course of 6 days. Come on, grow up.

Not enough was done to help this animal in distress. Killing the bear is a shameful and senseless "solution". Reporting that it could not have been tranquilized, but WAS able to be shot and killed, is idiotic.
